Q: What inspired you to become a tutor?
A: I learned about the program when I heard a request for tutors at the end of Mass at Christ the King Church one Saturday. I hadn’t known about it before and wasn’t sure how helpful I could be. Still, the announcement really stayed with me. I enjoy working with adult learners, and it felt like the right opportunity. Although I was nervous at first, I’m so glad I took that step and volunteered.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with your students?
A: I truly enjoy getting to know my students and hearing about their lives. One of the most rewarding moments is seeing them learn new words or phrases and then confidently use them in conversation. Watching that progress happen is incredibly exciting. My students bring so much joy, and it’s a privilege to support their learning.

Q: Can you share a favorite moment or success story from tutoring?
A: Every small success feels meaningful — whether it’s learning a new word or new skills to make daily life easier. One especially memorable experience was being able to support a student, even in a small way, on his journey to becoming a U.S. citizen.

Q: What has surprised you most about tutoring with our program?
A: The sense of community has been a wonderful surprise — and the potlucks are a definite bonus! I’ve also enjoyed working alongside the DLC staff and fellow tutors. It’s been rewarding to volunteer with people from the community and form new friendships.

Q: Is there anything you’d like people to know about your experience as a tutor?
A: Tutoring has been a joyful and fulfilling experience. I’ve been blessed with wonderful students, and together we’ve made meaningful progress. The combination of learning and laughter has made this unlike any educational experience I’ve had. I would encourage anyone considering tutoring to give it a try — it truly is a wonderful experience.
